Amsterdam Art Week: Apple Tree

Luther Museum Amsterdam, Nieuwe Keizersgracht 570
From 22 May 2025 to 22 June 2025

Visit Apple Tree — A Dialogue between Myth, Architecture, and Transformation. In collaboration with m.simons gallery, the Luther Museum Amsterdam presents the sculpture exhibition Apple Tree. Especially for Amsterdam Art Week, the museum will open its walled garden on the Nieuwe Keizersgracht to the public.

The exhibition is curated and features works by Hadrien Gérenton and Tim Mathijsen, complemented by sculptures from invited artists, all of whom share a connection to Amsterdam.

Hadrien Gérenton (b. 1987, France) creates surreal metal sculptures that blend mythical and prehistoric themes. His work explores the relationship between nature and anti-human habitats in intriguing ways.

Tim Mathijsen (b. 1987, Netherlands) primarily works with plaster, reinterpreting architectural elements through sculpture. His art investigates the transformation of meaning and knowledge, inviting reflection on the world around us.

Both artists are based in Amsterdam, where they completed their (post-academic) studies. Their work has been exhibited internationally and is now on view at the Luther Museum Amsterdam.

Why is it called Apple Tree?

The exhibition takes its name from a statement attributed to Martin Luther during the crisis year of 1533: "If I knew that the world would end tomorrow, I would still plant an apple tree today." At the time, Luther was seriously ill and believed he did not have long to live — yet he bought a garden to replant. His message was one of hope and perseverance, even in the face of a world in decline.

The apple tree, as used in the title, is a symbol of knowledge, temptation, and transformation — themes that carry deep religious and cultural significance. By placing the exhibition in the museum’s walled garden, this symbolism becomes both physical and present: a living space where art, faith, nature, and history converge.
